Dashain is considered the longest and biggest festival of Nepal, lasting for 15 days, though primarily for Hindus, people of other communities also take part in the festivities. This festival is celebrated as a triumph of good over evil and fills the hearts of the Nepalese people with joy by bringing the families and communities together. Since more than 80% of Nepalese people are Hindus, the government provides at least 5 days of public holidays, which are the longest public holidays in Nepal.
History and Mythology Behind Dashain
The origin of Dashain is often associated with two powerful legends- one from the Puranas and the other from the Ramayana.
1. The Puranas

This is the legend about the victory of the Goddess Durga over Mahishasura (a shape-shifting demon). Mahishasura is a Sanskrit word consisting of two words: Mahisha and asura, Mahisa meaning “buffalo”, and asura, meaning “demon”. Together, it can be translated as “buffalo demon”. Mahishasura wasn’t an ordinary foe by any means his father was Rambha (the demon king), and his mother was a buffalo lady.
Mahishasura performed intense penance (Tapasya) to impress Brahma (creator). Pleased by his devotion, Brahma granted him a powerful boon (bardan) that no man or God could defeat him. After gaining the boon he becomes arrogant, thinking no woman can challenge him. Mahishasura went on a rampage, spreading fear throughout heaven and earth. Even the army of gods couldn’t do anything to him.
Defeated and exhausted, the gods realized that only a woman could stop him but no woman in heaven and earth could win against him because he was too powerful. So, by combining the divine powers of Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, they created a powerful goddess named Durga. Each god gifted her a weapon: Sudarsan Chakra from Vishnu, Trident from Shiva, and thunderbolt from Indra. She mounted a fierce tiger and marched towards heaven which was the stronghold of Mahishasura at that time. Her fierce roar echoed through the heavens.
Mahishasura tried to negotiate with Durga by proposing marriage, which was refused by Durga as she was devoted to Lord Shiva. Durga warned him to surrender, but he refused resulting in a fierce battle for 9 days, with Durga’s strength unmatched. On the tenth day, with a decisive blow she beheaded Mahishasura with her chakra bringing peace to heaven.
This victory marks the beginning of the Dashain festival. The ninth day of battle is remembered as Navaratri, and the tenth day, or victory day, is remembered as Vijaya Dashami.
2. The Ramayana
