Overview of the trek
The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek to Jomsom is a favored option for trekkers who have limited time but still want to experience the dramatic mountain scenery and cultural diversity of the Annapurna region. By ending the trek in Jomsom rather than completing the full circuit to Nayapul or Dhampus Phedi, travelers can shorten their journey while still covering the most iconic and rewarding sections of the trail. This route offers a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and flexibility.
To help with altitude acclimatization, most trekkers begin the trek from Syange, where the gradual elevation gain supports a safer and more comfortable ascent. However, some with limited time or prior high-altitude experience may choose to start from higher points like Dharapani or Chame, both accessible by road from Besisahar. While starting higher up reduces the number of trekking days, it also requires extra caution as the body has less time to adjust to increasing elevations.
The trek’s most challenging and rewarding section is the crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters)—a dramatic high point that offers sweeping views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From there, trekkers descend into the arid landscapes of Lower Mustang, eventually reaching Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. This spiritual stop adds cultural depth to the trek, offering a glimpse into local religious practices and traditions.
After Muktinath, the trail continues to Jomsom, a windswept town situated in the Kali Gandaki Valley. Traditionally, most trekkers take a 25-minute scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, providing aerial views of the world’s deepest gorge and the surrounding Himalayas. However, thanks to the expanding road network, it's now also possible to complete the return journey to Pokhara entirely overland by private jeep or public bus, either from Jomsom or directly from Muktinath. This added flexibility makes the route accessible to a wider range of travelers.
The landscapes along the route are incredibly diverse—ranging from lush green hills and terraced farmland in the lower sections to alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and the dry, rugged terrain of the trans-Himalayan region. Trekkers pass through culturally rich villages such as Jagat, Pisang, and Manang, where Tibetan-influenced architecture, monasteries, and friendly locals create an immersive experience that goes far beyond just the scenery.
Since its opening in 1977, the Annapurna Circuit has been regarded as one of the most rewarding trekking routes in the world. The shortened version ending in Jomsom is ideal for those who want to experience the thrill of high-altitude trekking and the region’s cultural richness—without committing to the full-length circuit. It’s a well-balanced adventure suitable for both seasoned trekkers and fit travelers looking for a memorable Himalayan journey in a more manageable timeframe.
