Introduction to Renjo La and Cho La Pass Trek

The Renjo La and Cho La Pass trek is a challenging journey that traverses rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, and remote villages. This trek begins and ends in Lukla, a small town with an airport that serves as the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, the trail heads north, passing through traditional Sherpa villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and lush forests, as well as the stunning Gokyo glacial lakes and glaciers.

Hikers will have the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains, including Mount Everest, on their way to Renjo La Pass and Cho La Pass. Renjo La Pass is considered challenging, reaching an altitude of 5,360 meters, while Cho La Pass is moderately difficult, at an altitude of 5,420 meters.

The trek to these two passes is strenuous and requires a good level of physical fitness, but the panoramic views of the mountain ranges and glaciers make it all worthwhile. Typically, this trek takes 16 to 19 days to complete. It is regarded as one of the most rewarding treks in Nepal, as it allows trekkers to explore the beautiful Himalayas, experience the unique Sherpa culture, and see the world's highest mountain up close.

The Renjo La and Cho La Pass Trek, combined with a visit to Everest Base Camp, spans 19 days and takes you to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar via the two passes. After reaching Kala Patthar, you'll trek downhill, passing through several villages, including Dingboche and Tengboche, on your way back to Lukla. From there, you'll take an early morning flight to Kathmandu.

After breakfast we head west along the valley of the Bhote Koshi called Thame. It is situated at an important junction along the old primary trade route to and fro Tibet via the Nagpala Pass. Overnight at Teahouse/Lodge

The way from Thame to Gokyo is too long for one day, that's why trekkers usually have an intermediate stop at Lungden. The walk is quite easy as the altitude is gained gradually with no steep sections to speak of along the way. The scenery is quite different from anything we had seen so far. The trail goes above the tree line and the landscape is one of vast expanses of dry barren land with distant white peaks on the horizon, it is almost desert-like. Lungden is just a group of lodges, not a true village, but it is a convenient base to climb the Renjo La pass. Overnight at Teahouse/Lodge

Renjo La is the high pass that connects the Thame and Gokyo valleys and it certainly offers some of the best views in the Everest area. Lungden to Gokyo Crossing Renjo La on the way to Gokyo was one of the best Treks. The original Gompa was built in 1916 but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1934. Disaster struck again, as the replacement building was burnt to the ground in 1989. The new monastery was finished in 1994 and has a library and cultural center plus a school, which educates about 30 young monks. Overnight at Teahouse/Lodge

Early morning good view of Mt Everest. From Tengboche, we pass through pine and rhododendron forests along the River towards Namche. We enjoy the mountains lurking in the back as we retrace our steps. Overnight at Teahouse/Lodge

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk cautiously as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, the trail becomes more level and natural. After our arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. Overnight at Teahouse/Lodge

We catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. After reaching Kathmandu airport, transfer to Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.

Lukla gets occasional flight delays during the main season. This may cause missing your international flights as well, so we recommend you to prepare accordingly. Lukla suffers from quick weather changes and that may affect inbound and outbound flights. We reserved this day for possible flight delays. If we have a timely flight on DAY 19, we can use this day for rest in Kathmandu. You can shop around local markets and walk around the city. Overnight at Hotel

After breakfast, End of our services with departure transfer to the Kathmandu airport to board flight for your onward destination.
