The trek from Jiri to Everest Base Camp follows the original classic Everest Base Camp trekking route. This trail is a beautiful classic trekking and hiking trail, among the most famous trekking routes in Nepal. The Everest Base Camp Trek usually starts from Lukla or Salleri.
These are not the classic routes of Mount Everest Base Camp trekking. If you want to trek on the classic Everest Base Camp trekking route, you have to start from Bhandar near Jiri Bazaar (old starting point of the trek).
Trekking from Jiri is the oldest trekking route to reach Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar follows a historical trail that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay used for their first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek is longer and provides a more gradual ascent, allowing for better acclimatization.
Since Lukla was a developed airport, most trekkers start their trek from Lukla and not from Jiri. However, there are still some trekkers who start their trek from Jiri Bazaar, but today you can also take a bus to Bhandar, which is about 36 km from Jiri. The distance from Kathmandu to Jiri is 188 km.
