The Cho La Pass trek via Everest Base Camp is a challenging trek that takes you to three important sites at Everest Base Camp, Cho La Pass and Gokyo Lakes. Cho La Pass is the most popular of the three high passes in the Khumbu region and can be crossed clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Crossing the Cho La Pass via Gokyo is clockwise, crossing via Everest Base Camp is anti-clockwise. Most trekkers prefer to trek clockwise, but some choose to go to Everest Base Camp first and then to Cho-La Pass (5,420 m) and Gokyo Lake. Crossing the Cho La Pass via Everest Base Camp is an additional challenge and a different experience to crossing from the Gokyo side.
The trek usually begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain town that serves as the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, you begin your journey that gradually takes you through picturesque Sherpa villages, dense forests and across suspension bridges over roaring rivers.
The trail leads to Namche Bazaar, a bustling trading town and acclimatization point where you can explore the local culture and enjoy breathtaking views of Everest and its surrounding peaks. From Namche, continue trek to Tengboche, known for its ancient Buddhist monastery and magnificent mountain views.
After Tengboche, the trail leads to Dingboche and on to Lobuche, where you can catch your first glimpse of the Khumbu Glacier. From Lobuche, continue the trek and reach Gorak Shep, the last teahouse stop. From here you can hike to Everest Base Camp, which is located at an altitude of 5,364 meters. This is the base camp where climbers prepare for the ascent to the summit of Mount Everest. After visiting Everest base camp, you will return to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay.
The next morning you will climb Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters, another great site in the region. It offers one of the most incredible panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After enjoying the most beautiful views, you will return to Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, the trail leads to the challenging Cho La Pass, located at an altitude of 5,420 meters. Crossing the pass requires careful negotiation of a steep and icy trail. You should be well-prepared and have the necessary equipment and experience for high-altitude trekking.
After crossing the Cho La Pass, the trail leads to the beautiful Gokyo Valley, known for its pristine lakes and breathtaking views of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. You can hike up Gokyo Ri, a viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan Mountains. After exploring Gokyo, you will descend to Namche Bazaar. From Namche, you will continue your descent trek to Lukla to finish your trek and fly back to Kathmandu the next day.
