  • Overview of the trek

Namobuddha Day Hiking is one of the most popular and enriching day hikes from Kathmandu, Nepal. This moderately challenging yet accessible hike offers a perfect blend of breathtaking Himalayan views, serene natural landscapes, and spiritual discovery. It’s an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, all within a day.

The hike usually begins from Dhulikhel, a beautiful hillside town located about 30 kilometers east of Kathmandu. After roughly an hour’s drive from the capital, you reach Dhulikhel—a place known not only for its rich Newari culture but also for its panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including peaks such as Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar, Dorje Lakpa, and the Rolwaling Himal. Starting early is recommended to witness the spectacular sunrise over the mountains and enjoy clear views during the hike.

From Dhulikhel, the trail leads you through the old market area, gradually transitioning into a more natural setting. One of the initial challenges is a steep climb up 1000 stone steps through a quiet forest, culminating at the Kali Temple situated on a hilltop. The effort is well rewarded with a wide, scenic view of the surrounding hills and distant mountains.

After a break at the temple, the hike continues through peaceful terraced fields, quaint rural villages, and forest paths. The route includes a mix of downhill, flat sections, and some steady ascents, making it suitable for most hikers with average fitness. The total hiking duration is around 4 hours, with plenty of opportunities to stop and soak in the natural beauty or chat with friendly locals along the way.

Eventually, you arrive at Namobuddha, one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. According to legend, this is where Lord Buddha, in one of his previous lives as a prince, selflessly offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs. In honor of this act of compassion, a beautiful monastery complex and stupas now stand on the site.

At Namobuddha, visitors can walk around the monastery grounds, spin prayer wheels, make offerings, or join the monks for a moment of meditation. The peaceful ambiance and hilltop views make it a perfect place for reflection and spiritual connection.

After some time exploring and resting at Namobuddha, a private vehicle will take you back to Kathmandu, completing a full day of adventure, culture, and inner peace.

Whether you're a nature lover, spiritual seeker, or cultural explorer, the Namobuddha Day Hike offers something for everyone—making it a must-do experience while in Nepal.

"A very well-managed tour with a friendly and experienced guide—it was one of the best parts of my trip! I’ve made a great friend in my guide, and I’m sure we’ll stay in touch for a long time. Binod Thapa, I think you’re running a fantastic business, and I’ll definitely use your services again soon. I came to Nepal for the food, the people, and the experience—and found all three in abundance. As a photographer, I’ve seen and captured more than most do in a lifetime. Thank you both for such a memorable journey. I’ll be back! I highly recommend Alpine Adventure Club to everyone planning to travel to Nepal and beyond for trekking, tours, and adventures."
