  • Overview of the trek

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and challenging trekking adventures, leading trekkers to the base of Mount Makalu (8,475 m), the world’s fifth-highest mountain. This trek takes you deep into the eastern Himalayas, offering some of the most untouched and breathtaking scenery in the country.

The journey begins with a flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a trek north along the Arun River through traditional villages such as Sedwa and Num. The trail gradually ascends into higher alpine terrain, crossing the Shipton La Pass (4,127 m) before entering the spectacular Upper Barun Valley. From here, trekkers are rewarded with stunning close-up views of Mount Makalu and Chamlang (7,290 m).

The Makalu Base Camp Trek explores one of Nepal’s least-frequented regions. The Barun Valley lies within the internationally protected Makalu Barun National Park, established in 1992 and covering 2,330 sq. km. The park is bordered by the Arun River to the east and Sagarmatha National Park to the west.

This pristine area is rich in biodiversity and home to wildlife such as wolves, lynx, foxes, and the elusive snow leopard. The descent from the Barun Valley passes through dramatic landscapes, including the lower Barun Glacier, dense pine and rhododendron forests, and the Makalu basin, before returning to Tumlingtar for a flight back to Kathmandu.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is ideal for adventurous trekkers seeking solitude, raw natural beauty, and a true wilderness experience in the Himalayas.
