  • Overview of the trek

Lower Dolpo Trek, also known as the Shey Phoksundo Trek, invites adventurous travelers to discover one of Nepal's most secluded Himalayan regions. This trek is designed to lead you to the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,612 meters. Along the way, trekkers will cross the high-altitude Numala (5,318m) and Bagala (5,190m) passes, creating an unforgettable experience amidst Nepal's natural splendor and rich culture.

This incredible journey unfolds across breathtaking landscapes filled with untouched natural beauty and preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture. The region is legendary for being one of the 'hidden valleys,' or beyuls, created by Guru Rinpoche. According to lore, these valleys served as sanctuaries for devout Buddhists during turbulent times. The trek is surrounded by majestic mountains, including the awe-inspiring Dhaulagiri range, and remains isolated for much of the year, reflecting its historical ties with Tibet.

The journey begins with two short flights, first to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal in Dolpo. As you traverse the trekking route, you will pass through charming villages and lush green valleys, gradually ascending to remote alpine terrain. Upon reaching Shey Phoksundo Lake, you’ll be rewarded with mesmerizing views of turquoise waters against dramatic cliffs. The return journey loops back via the Numala and Bagala passes, offering panoramic Himalayan vistas and encounters with enduring cultural traditions.

Much of this trek lies within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, home to diverse wildlife such as snow leopards and Himalayan black bears. Given its high-altitude terrain and required endurance, this trek is best suited for experienced trekkers. While basic tea houses or homestays are available, camping is essential in more remote sections. For those seeking a rare blend of untouched nature and cultural richness, the Lower Dolpo Trek offers an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
