Langtang and Helambu Trek

Langtang and Helambu Trek

Langtang and Helambu Trek is located in the north of Kathmandu. It will take you to Langtang, Gosaikunda and Helambu. Langtang Valley is aptly called the Valley of Glaciers. The view of the mountains here is very spectacular. On either side of the valley, mountains rise, soaring in the sky. The valley offers painstaking forests, slow-flowing rivers and swift mountain streams, rugged cliffs, and snow-capped peaks. In the upper part of the valley, there are snow bridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, a tiny lake with icebergs floating on them, and waters of crystalline brightness. There are high mountains of solid ice. Gosainkunda, regarded as sacred land in Hinduism, is dotted with lakes atop the mountain, offering a quiet respite.

Langtang is home to Tibetan culture and the Yak. Gosaikunda is a great sacred lake situated at an altitude of 4460 m. It has a great combination of mountains and cultural differences. This trek starts from Syabru Besi (1503 m) and ends at Sundrijal. From Syabru Besi, you will follow the Langtang River to the east until you reach Kyanjin Gompa (3870). From here we hike up to Kyanjin Ri (4773m) or Tsergo Ri (4984m) for excellent views of the mountains. Then we will go back to Lama Hotel and go to Gosaikunda.

After spending the night at Gosaikunda we cross the Lauribina-La/Gosaikunda Pass (4610m) and come to Tharapati, Kutumsang, Chisapani, and finally, you reach Sundarijal where we take a bus/car to Kathmandu. Customers carry only day pack and go at their own pace. Langtang and Helambu Valley Trek is one of the best 2-week treks in Nepal.

Another suspension bridge carries us over the south side of the Langtang Khola, this river we will be following upwards for the next couple of days. We climb slowly to Doman (1680m) and continue over a rocky ridge to Landslide Lodge and Hot Spring restaurant; named after a small hot spring on the opposite river bank at 1810 meter. The trail now climbs gently up to Bamboo. Opposite the river we will see near vertical cliffs covered with cactuses. After Bamboo we cross the Langtang Khola on a new suspension bridge to the north bank. The forest becomes sparser and drier on this side of the river, consisting mainly of scrub nettles and oaks. As the trail steeply climbs up to Laurebina today you will enjoy the outstanding views of Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang lirung.  It is possible to continue to Goisakund on the same day, but for acclimatization reasons as well as morning view from here is excellent so it is better to stay one overnight in Laurebina Yak (3920m). Gosaikund Lake has a black rock in the middle, said to be the head of Shiva. According to the legend, Shiva created the lake when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after consuming poison.
