Kanchenjunga Region

The Kanchenjunga Region trek of Nepal is the country's most scenic and remote trekking area. Travelers are offered the opportunity to walk through unspoiled country, experience rich local cultures, and witness the grandeur of the world's third-highest mountain at 8,586 meters, Kanchenjunga. While other more popular Everest or Annapurna areas are more touristed, Kanchenjunga is less traveled, and making it the ideal destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path trek. The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, or the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, is the most popular route in the region, taking trekkers to the northern and southern bases of Kanchenjunga and offering superb views of the mountain and other surrounding peaks. The trek is classified as challenging due to its length, the altitudes, and the remote conditions. There are slopes on the trail that are steep, and high altitudes may lead to altitude sickness, so acclimatization is necessary to make the trek safe and enjoyable. Both trekkers must obtain two permits: the Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which costs $20 a week, and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), which costs 3,000 NPR. These permits can be secured by booking with a government-registered trekking agency, and the trekking group must consist of at least two. In the course of the trek, there are teahouses that provide basic accommodation and food, though facilities are more primitive than in more popular trekking areas like Everest or Annapurna. The most widely used method to access the Kanchenjunga region is to fly from Kathmandu for 45 minutes to Biratnagar or Bhadrapur, and then by road for 7–8 hours to Taplejung, the gateway to the trek. The journey is pleasant driving through rural landscape before one reaches the trek starting point. Though occasional flights from Biratnagar to Suketar are weather-dependent, typically unreliable, the jeep ride from Biratnagar or Bhadrapur to Taplejung is the better and more dependable option for trekkers. Alternatively, trekkers may choose to drive the long route of 18–19 hours from Kathmandu to Taplejung along the Prithvi Highway and East-West Highway. There is also an option of a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Suketar, which provides a bird's eye view of the Himalayas, though flight schedules can be unpredictable, and it is better to enquire beforehand about dependability. The Kanchenjunga Region Trek gives tourists the chance to experience raw natural beauty, cultural interactions, and peaceful solitude in one of Nepal's most remote and breathtaking trekking areas. For either the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek or the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, it will be a trip to remember beneath the shadow of one of the planet's highest and loveliest mountains.
