Jiri to Gokyo Valley Trek

Jiri to Gokyo Valley Trek

Jiri (188 km from Kathmandu) is the oldest starting point for Everest trekking, but nowadays you can also travel by bus to Bhandar, which is 36 km from Jiri and can be reached in a day from Kathmandu. The journey by local bus takes about 9 hours, but a private jeep is a little quicker.

The trek from Jiri and Bhandar to Gokyo Valley and Gokyo Lakes is a pleasant and oldest trekking route that starts at low altitude and reaches an altitude of 5357 meters at the summit of Gokyo Ri. The trek from Jiri Bazaar to the Gokyo Valley follows the old route used by the Everest expedition in 1953.

After a scenic drive of around 9 hours from Kathmandu to Bhandar, the trek begins from here. You follow a spectacular route through the Solukhumbu region to beautiful Sherpa villages, with each village having something new to offer. On the way to Phakding, there is ample opportunity to explore the beautiful forests, cultivated landscape and the many monasteries at high altitude.

Once you have crossed Phakding, you will ascend to Namche Bazaar, the main trading village of Khumbu. Attractions include the spectacular scenery and the open-minded Sherpa people of Solukhumbu. Trekking from Namche to Gokyo Lake is an incredible journey that takes you through the breathtaking sight of the Gokyo Lakes.

The trek from Jiri to Gokyo explores the lower Solukhumbu and the breathtaking Gokyo Valley, which lies in the upper Khumbu region. The first half of the trek is not only hard work but also offers breathtaking scenery. The trek crosses the valley, starting in the Hindu lowlands of Nepal and ending in the Tibetan Buddhist highlands.

The Gokyo Valley is a land of high altitude lakes and glaciers. From here you have a magnificent view of the highest peaks, from west to east are Cho you (8,153 m), Gyachung Kang (7,922 m), Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,501 m) and further away Makalu.

From Gokyo Ri you have a better view of Everest than from Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
