Trip Summary

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is among the most favored and accessible short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal, offering breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas, rich cultural experiences, and an enjoyable trekking experience for both new and experienced trekkers. It is perfectly suited for those with limited time, offering a complete trekking experience in only 3 to 6 days. The highlight of the trekking is the breathtaking sunrise from Poon Hill (3,210 m) with a panoramic view of some of the globe's tallest mountains, such as Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna I-IV, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Lamjung Himal.

The trek usually begins at Nayapul, a one-hour drive north of Pokhara, though most trekkers now prefer to start higher up the trail at Ulleri or Banthanti in a jeep. The trek along scenic Gurung and Magar villages such as Birethanti, Hile, and Tikhedhunga, nestled between terraced fields and green forested hillsides, is followed by an unrelenting but scenic climb along stone stairs to Ulleri. Early glimpses of the Annapurna range can be seen. From here, the path traverses stunning rhododendron and oak woods, particularly resplendent during spring bloom, through Banthanti and Nangethanti to the charming village of Ghorepani (2,855 m).

On the following morning, trekkers rise early for a steep yet brief climb to Poon Hill, which is one of the most renowned viewpoints in Nepal. The enchanting sunrise shows golden colors over the Himalayas capped with snow, an experience never to be forgotten. After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, the trek continues to Tadapani, through dense rhododendron forests with stunning views along the way. From Tadapani, you’ll descend to Ghandruk, a beautiful village known for its traditional Gurung culture and mountain-facing stone houses. At this point, many trekkers choose to end the trek and return to Pokhara by jeep.

But the trek can be extended to Landruk, Tolkha, Pitam Deurali, Pothana, and Dhampus, ultimately terminating at Dhampus Phedi, from where a drive brings you back to Pokhara. The trek can also be made optional or extended by adding nearby sites such as Jhinu Danda or Tatopani to enjoy natural hot springs. Or longer excursions such as Mohare Danda, Khopra Ridge, Mulde Hill, or Mardi Himal for fewer crowds of Himalayan encounter.

Offering a perfectly balanced package of landscapes, cultural interaction, and moderate level of trekking difficulty, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the finest options for whoever has a time limit to spend. But wants to experience the magic of the Annapurna Himalayas. Its easy access from Pokhara and well-established routes make it one of the best treks in Nepal for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
