Introduction to Everest Base Camp Trek via Jir
The 21-day Classic Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri follows the historic route used by early Everest expeditions before Lukla Airport was built. The journey begins with an overland drive from Kathmandu to Bhandar, where we start trekking through the Lower Solu region. Starting at a lower altitude allows for a slower progression toward the high mountains and gives your body more time to adjust naturally.
From Bhandar, we trek through the Lower Solu, passing traditional villages such as Sete and Junbesi before continuing toward Nunthala, Kharikhola, Bupsa, and Surke. The trail takes us through terraced hillsides, pine and rhododendron forests, small streams, and suspension bridges, with a mix of gradual climbs and descents along the way. We pass Buddhist monasteries and traditional settlements where Sherpa and Rai communities continue to preserve their culture and way of life. As we approach Phakding, the landscape gradually changes and we join the main trail toward Everest Base Camp.
From Phakding, the trail continues through Monjo and Jorsale before entering Sagarmatha National Park. We cross suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River and climb steadily through the forest toward Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the main trading center of the Khumbu region. After an acclimatization day in Namche, we head toward Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery, before continuing through Pangboche and Dingboche. The landscape gradually changes as we gain elevation, with wider valleys, rocky slopes, and increasingly close views of the surrounding peaks.
From Dingboche, we continue toward Duglha and Lobuche before reaching Gorak Shep (5,164m), the highest settlement on the main Everest Base Camp trail. From Gorak Shep, we trek alongside the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), then return to Gorak Shep for the night. Early the next morning, we make an ascent of Kala Patthar (5,545m), one of the finest viewpoints in the region, offering spectacular views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and other surrounding peaks.
After completing the major highlights, we retrace our steps through Gorak Shep, Lobuche, Dingboche, Tengboche, Namche Bazaar, Phakding, and Lukla. Although we follow familiar sections on the return, the changing light and different direction of travel offer a fresh perspective of the villages, forests, rivers, and mountain scenery. From Lukla, we take a scenic mountain flight back to Kathmandu or, during the peak trekking seasons, to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport).
An alternative return is possible from the Everest region through Surke, followed by an overland journey via Phaplu and Salleri to Kathmandu. Our standard itinerary, however, returns to Lukla, providing a convenient flight connection after the trek.
This itinerary is ideal for trekkers who want to experience the historic journey to Everest at a gradual pace. The trek combines varied landscapes, traditional villages, local hospitality, and the distinctive cultures of the Solu and Khumbu regions.
