Introduction to Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes
The Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes without crossing Cho La Pass (5,420m) is a less challenging alternative to the classic route via Cho La Pass. The main highlight of this journey is the opportunity to explore two of the most popular destinations in the Everest region, the beautiful Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp, within a single trek.
Along the way, you will have the chance to climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m) and Kala Patthar (5,545m), two of the best viewpoints in the region for sunrise and panoramic mountain views. If you are looking for a different experience from the standard Everest Base Camp routes and prefer to avoid crossing the Cho La Pass, this route can be an excellent choice.
This alternative route to Everest Base Camp offers a combination of stunning landscapes, Sherpa culture, and unforgettable Himalayan scenery without the challenges of a high mountain pass. The trek starts with a thrilling mountain flight to Lukla (2,840m), either from Kathmandu or, during the peak trekking seasons, from Ramechhap (Manthali Airport). Ramechhap is approximately a 4–6-hour drive from Kathmandu and serves as the departure point for Lukla flights during the busy trekking seasons. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley to Namche Bazaar before heading toward Phortse Thanga, Dole, Machermo, and Gokyo, a peaceful village located beside the crystal-clear Gokyo Lakes.
During the journey to Gokyo, you can explore the beautiful Gokyo Valley and its series of sacred lakes. A hike to Gokyo Ri provides breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and other Himalayan peaks. After enjoying the views from Gokyo Ri, the trail retraces back toward Phortse Thanga, crossing the Dudh Koshi River and ascending to Phortse Village, a traditional Sherpa settlement surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery. There is also an alternative trail from Gokyo to Phortse Village via Nha (Na). However, this route can be difficult and less safe during snowy conditions due to the narrow and slippery sections of the trail. Although it offers a different adventure, we recommend the regular route through Dole and Phortse Thanga, which provides better views and a more comfortable trekking experience.
From Phortse Village, the trail continues to Pangboche (3,930m), a Sherpa village where you can visit the 350-year-old Pangboche Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayas. The trek then continues to Dingboche (4,410m), an ideal place for acclimatization and experiencing the traditional Sherpa lifestyle. Leaving Dingboche, the trail heads toward Lobuche and then Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, you will hike to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Khumbu Icefall and surrounding peaks. After spending time at Everest Base Camp, return to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay.
The following morning, climb Kala Patthar (5,545m), one of the most famous viewpoints in the Everest region. From the summit, you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the surrounding Himalayan range, especially during sunrise. After completing the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar visits, the return journey follows the trail through Tengboche Monastery, the important Buddhist center of the Khumbu region, before continuing downhill to Lukla. Most of the return route is downhill, which can put extra pressure on the knees and ankles, so walking slowly and carefully is recommended. Upon reaching Lukla, you can celebrate the completion of your Himalayan journey before taking a scenic mountain flight back to Kathmandu or, during the peak trekking seasons, to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) the following day.
