Introduction to Chulu West Climbing

The challenging journey to Chulu West (6,419 meters) begins from a base camp nestled in a small, hidden valley north of Manang, just off the main trail to Thorong La Pass. From base camp, climbers ascend steep scree slopes, reaching a col at 4,900 meters, and then continue up a snow slope to establish a high camp at 5,300 meters, just below a technical rock band. This rock band requires careful navigation, with fixed ropes placed to assist climbers in the ascent.

After reaching the high camp at 5,300 meters, climbers make their final push to the summit along a narrowing ridge. The summit offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna massif, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. The climb combines rock and snow climbing, requiring experience in high-altitude mountaineering and technical skills.

Due to the climb's demanding nature and the high-altitude conditions, climbers must be well-prepared and acclimatized. Expeditions often provide guides and logistical support to ensure a safe and successful climb. Combining the ascent of Chulu West with the famous Around Annapurna trek makes it a memorable and rewarding Himalayan adventure.

Along the way, you'll pass through Yak Kharka, a common resting point, and may see herds of yaks grazing in the pastures. Upon arrival in Ledar, rest and prepare for the next day’s journey toward Chulu West Base Camp. Overnight at a Teahouse/Lodge.

After breakfast, start your trek from Ledar to Chulu West Base Camp, which takes about 5-6 hours. The trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and yak pastures, offering stunning views of the Annapurna and Chulu ranges. As you climb higher, the terrain becomes more rugged and remote. Reaching base camp marks an important stage in your climbing journey, providing time to rest, acclimatize, and prepare equipment for the summit push. Overnight at Tent Camp in the quiet and scenic surroundings of Chulu West Base Camp.

After breakfast, the trek from Chulu West Base Camp to High Camp (5,300m) begins with a steady, uphill climb over rocky and occasionally icy terrain. The thin air makes the ascent challenging, so pacing and hydration are key. As you gain altitude, panoramic views of the Annapurna range and surrounding peaks unfold. After a few hours of trekking, you’ll reach High Camp, where you'll rest, check gear, and prepare for the summit push early the next morning. Overnight at a tent camp.

After an early breakfast, you'll ascend from High Camp (5,300m) to the summit of Chulu West Peak (6,419m), navigating steep, rocky, and icy terrain with mountaineering gear. At the summit, enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna range, Manaslu, and surrounding peaks. After a brief rest, you'll descend back to High Camp, then continue down to Base Camp, where you'll overnight at a tent camp.

After breakfast at Base Camp, you'll begin the descent from Chulu West Base Camp, trekking through beautiful alpine scenery and rugged terrain. The trail gradually descends, passing through forests and small settlements as you make your way toward Thorong Phedi. This day's trek is less strenuous, allowing for a more relaxed pace as you descend to a lower elevation. Upon reaching Thorong Phedi, a small camp at the base of the mighty Thorong La Pass (5,416m), you'll rest and prepare for the challenging ascent of the pass the following day. Overnight at a teahouse/lodge.

The descent can be tough on the knees, but the scenery remains stunning throughout. Upon reaching Muktinath, you'll visit the temple and explore the holy site. Overnight at a teahouse/lodge.
