Trip Summary

The Cho La Pass Trek is an adventurous and challenging journey in the Everest region of Nepal, which connects the picturesque Gokyo Valley to the world-famous Everest Base Camp through the Cho La Pass. This pass is at the high altitude of 5,420 meters. Along with Kongma La and Renjo La, Cho La Pass is one of the three most exciting passes for trekking in the region – you will definitely not get bored: there are beautiful views of the mountains, picturesque glacier crossings, and challenging hiking. This trek will be a perfect choice for those who are passionate about nature and a real adventure.

The journey kicks off with a plane trip over the majestic landscape to the Lukla airport from Kathmandu, or, during busy periods of the trekking season, from Ramechhap (Manthali), 135 km from the capital and 4–5 hours of drive. The trek begins in Lukla, where one follows the Dudh Koshi River to the gorgeous Sherpa villages, Nayakhang, Chheplung, Ghat, Phakding, Monjo, and Jorsalle. The path then climbs steeply to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), the trade center of the Khumbu region, where the energy of the markets, the breathtaking mountain views and the ancient culture of the Sherpas promise a unique and unforgettable experience.

Once at Namche, the trail leads you to Phortse Thanga, Dole, and Machhermo, and finally to the emerald green lakes of Gokyo at an altitude of 4,750 meters. If you reach the summit of Gokyo Ri peak, which stands at an elevation of 5,357 meters, you will be rewarded with an outstanding panorama that includes Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier. From Gokyo (4,750 m), the trekkers climb across the Ngozumpa Glacier to Thangna (4,700 m) and then conquer the hard Cho La Pass (5,420 m) climb before descending into Dzongla's dazzling valley at 4,830 m. This place is a perfect spot for the trekkers to take a rest before they continue back to the normal Everest Base Camp trail.

From Dzongla, the trail gently rises and falls before leveling out on the approach to Lobuche (4,910 m). Leaving Lobuche behind, trekkers make a stop at Gorak Shep (5,164 m), the last teahouse settlement before reaching Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). It's from this point where an ascent to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) opens up breathtaking bird’s eye views and exceptional photographic chances of Mount Everest as well as the encircling Himalayan wonders.

The way back goes via Lobuche, Pheriche, and Pangboche and provides a soothing descent through gorgeous alpine scenery and traditional Sherpa villages. Trekkers also make a stop at Tengboche Monastery - the spiritual heart of the Sherpas, with awe-inspiring Ama Dablam as its backdrop. The last part of the trek retraces the steps back to Namche Bazaar, a final view of the bustling center of the Khumbu.

Sometimes trekkers stop in Namche Bazaar before continuing the trek through Monjo, Phakding, and other villages on the way to Lukla, where you catch a flight to Lukla for the last night in the mountains. The next day, a stunning flight brings you back to either Kathmandu or Ramechhap, marking the end of an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

If you rather ascend to the Everest Base Camp first and then continue to Gokyo through Cho La Pass, easily reverse this route. Our Everest Cho La Pass Trek itinerary is fully customizable, allowing trekkers to choose a route that best suits their speed and preferences while ensuring a safe and unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Himalayas.

Best Time of the Year for the Cho La Pass Trek

The best time for the Cho La Pass Trek is spring and autumn, with stable weather and clear views. Avoid monsoon rain and slippery trails, and winter’s heavy snow.

  • Autumn (September to November): This is one of the best times for the Cho La Pass Trek. Clear skies after the monsoon offer stunning mountain views, stable weather, and ideal conditions for safely crossing the high-altitude Cho La Pass.
  • Spring (March to May): This is another excellent time for the Cho La Pass Trek. The weather is mild, the skies are generally clear, and the lower trails are vibrant with blooming rhododendrons. This season offers great visibility of the Himalayan peaks and favorable conditions for crossing the high-altitude Cho La Pass.
  • Monsoon (June to August): This is not recommended for the Cho La Pass Trek. Heavy rainfall leads to slippery trails, poor visibility, and a higher risk of landslides. Flights to and from Lukla are often delayed or canceled, and crossing the Cho La Pass becomes dangerous due to wet, unstable conditions.
  • Winter (December to February): This is a challenging time for the Cho La Pass Trek. Extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and icy trails make the pass difficult or even impossible to cross. Many teahouses close at higher altitudes, and only experienced trekkers with proper gear should attempt the route during this season.

Accommodation in Cho La Pass Trek

Accommodation on the Cho La Pass Trek mainly consists of teahouses and lodges offering basic rooms. Most rooms are shared dormitories or simple private rooms with twin beds. Heating is limited, so bringing warm sleeping gear is essential. Bathrooms are usually shared, and hot showers may be available for an extra fee at some lodges.

Availability of Food in Cho La Pass Trek

Food availability on the Cho La Pass Trek is generally good along the main route, with teahouses and lodges offering a variety of meals. You can find local Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils), momos (dumplings), and noodles, as well as some Western options like pasta and omelets. Prices increase with altitude, and options may be limited near the pass, so carrying some snacks and energy bars is recommended.

Guides and Porters for Cho La Pass Trek

Guides and porters are highly recommended for the Cho La Pass Trek. Our packages include both, providing expert guidance to navigate challenging terrain and porters to carry your gear, making your trek safer and more enjoyable. Hiring them also supports local communities.
