  • Overview of the trek

The Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trek, including Poon Hill, is one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal, combining the classic Annapurna Base Camp route with the less-crowded, scenic Mardi Himal trail. This trek offers a perfect balance of breathtaking Himalayan views, cultural encounters, and peaceful mountain landscapes.

The journey begins with the Mardi Himal Trail, a quieter route known for its lush rhododendron forests, alpine ridges, and traditional villages. Trekkers ascend to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint (approx. 4,300 m), where sunrise unveils spectacular panoramas of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. For those seeking more adventure, it is possible to continue to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), which involves steeper, more exposed terrain that may be snow-covered depending on the season. Views from the base camp are similar to the viewpoint, so most trekkers stop at the viewpoint for safety and comfort.

On the way to Annapurna Base Camp, trekkers visit Poon Hill (3,210 m), famous for its iconic sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trail then follows the Modi Khola valley through bamboo forests, waterfalls, and glacial landscapes, offering both scenic beauty and cultural experiences. The trek culminates at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m), surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks including Annapurna I (8,091 m). Standing at the base of these massive mountains is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This combined trek is moderate in difficulty, with proper acclimatization and well-paced trekking suitable for those with reasonable fitness. Along the way, trekkers enjoy comfortable teahouse stays, warm Nepali hospitality, and cultural experiences in Gurung and Magar villages, making it an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Annapurna region.

"I really enjoyed the ABC (Annapurna base Camp) trek. It was a nice way with beautiful, different landscape during the whole trek. We could see the rhododendron in flower. We walked together with a friendly, well experienced guide who could always answer our questions also I like the joking porters very much. The accommodation always was well chosen by the guide and the standard was higher than I expected. Thank you very much to the guide & the porters and the organization of the trek done by the travel agency"
