The trek from Jiri to Cho La Pass is a challenging alternative trekking route in the Everest region. It is an old, traditional route that was taken in 1953 by two famous personalities, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, on their way to Mount Everest.
Trekking in the Everest region has changed in recent years, and flights to Lukla have become a more common starting point for trekkers. However, if you have time and can avoid a flight to Lukla, you should start your trek from Jiri or Bhandar to take the classic route. Jiri is a town located about 188 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu.
Between Jiri and Bhandar, an approximately 36 km long road has been built, so that you can travel by bus from Kathmandu to Bhandar in a single day (about 9 hours' drive) and start the trek from there. You trek through beautiful landscapes, passing through villages and terraced fields. After several days of trekking, you reach Namche Bazaar, a popular gateway to the Everest region.
The Jiri or Bhandar trek to the Cho La Pass offers the opportunity to explore the Solu and Khumbu (Solukhumbu), the Gokyo Lakes, climb the Gokyo Ri, cross the Cho La Pass (5,420 m) and climb Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and Kala Pattar (5,545 m).
The trek offers magnificent views of the highest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu etc., and the opportunity to interact with the locals. It is considered the highly acclaimed trekking route into the Everest region. We follow a spectacular route across the Solukhumbu area through the heart of the beautiful Sherpa villages, with each village having something new to offer.
On the way to Namche, you have the opportunity to discover beautiful forests, agricultural areas and several high-altitude monasteries. Namche is the most important trading town in the Khumbu region. The trek from Namche Bazaar to the Cho La Pass is a challenge.
Cho La Pass is a high altitude mountain pass that connects the Gokyo Valley with the Everest Base Camp trekking route. The trek involves passing through several villages and gaining altitude gradually. You will trek through places like Phortse Thanga, Dole, Machhema, Gokyo Lake and Dragnag (Thangna) before reaching Cho La Pass.
The trail offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, including Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and many more. After crossing the Chola pass, descend to Dzongla. From here the trail leads slightly downhill and uphill until you reach Lobuche (4910 m), the meeting point of the Everest Base Camp Trek.
About 2.5 hours after walking from Lobuche you will arrive in Gorak Shep (5,140 m), the final settlement before base camp. You store your luggage here and only take a water bottle with you. After lunch, you will hike to Everest Base Camp and be rewarded with panoramic views of Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, Khumbutse and the surrounding peaks. It is a great feeling to stand at the foot of the highest mountain in the world and hike back to Gorakshep where you will spend the night.
The next morning, hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the mountain giants. Kala Patthar is an excellent vantage point for the incredible views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori and Mount Everest. Enjoy every moment of the joy and sensational feelings you experience in the lap of Mount Everest. After enjoying the time, make your way down to Gorak Shep and continue the trek for a few days almost downhill to reach Lukla.
You will trek through places like Lobuche, Dingboche, Tengboche, Namche Bazaar, Manjo, Phakding and Chheplung before reaching Lukla (2,840 m). Spend the last night in the Himalayas in Lukla and take a flight to Kathmandu or Ramechhap the next morning and drive to your hotel in Kathmandu.
